Mauthausen

I suppose you all are wondering what I've been up to lately (there I go with the "you all" thing again....).Well, just in case anyone was wondering I've been up to quite a lot. Thanks for asking, by the way. In fact, last Wednesday we went on our first group trip to Salzburg, Munich, and a few other locations. And it ranked pretty highly in the most-entertaining-and-enlightening-trips-I've-been-on category. On a more serious note, our first stop was Mauthausen Concentration Camp. This was probably more in the "enlightening" category and because of that it was the most memorable experience for me. Over sixty years later and you can still feel a spirit of evil there. And excuse the sappiness, but my heart ached for the suffering souls that passed through that camp. It is impossible to fathom the depth of hatred and evil within the hearts of those responsible for this. The evil that would allow them to justify their actions and beliefs.
The camp is completely silent. It felt out of place to speak in anything but a whisper. For me as a (budding) photographer, rather than trying to document the beauty, as I usually attempt to do, I was documenting the hatred that existed and the healing that is trying to take its place. It's a hard thing to describe.
The saddest thing of all, is that this kind of hatred still exists. It didn't die with Hitler, or Lenin, or Stalin, or Hussein, or Bin Laden. Hopefully there will always be good and faithful people to stand in their way. Labels: Study Abroad |
